The real cost of TaxJar in 2026 (TaxJar pricing guide)
TaxJar raised prices in 2026 — their first pricing change in over six years. The new pricing is already live. If you're currently on TaxJar or evaluating it, here's exactly what you'll pay and why growing businesses are switching to TaxCloud.

TaxJar pricing 2026: Is it still worth it after the Stripe acquisition and price increase?

On top of the pricing changes, TaxJar was acquired by Stripe in 2021. Since then, customers report support outsourced to an international team, slower response times, and product development deprioritized in favor of Stripe Tax. The platform’s Shopify App Store rating has dropped to 2.9 stars — with virtually every 2023 and later review citing support issues (source: Shopify App Store, April 6, 2026).

If you’re evaluating TaxJar right now, or reconsidering it after the latest price increase, here’s exactly what you’ll pay, what you won’t get, and why growing businesses are switching to TaxCloud as their preferred TaxJar alternative.

TaxJar pricing changes 2026: What the increase means for your sales tax compliance costs

TaxJar raised prices in 2026 — their first pricing change in over six years. Two things changed:

  • Subscription costs increased significantly across both Starter and Professional plans — the Starter base rate doubled from $19/month to $39/month, with higher volume tiers seeing even steeper increases
  • AutoFile fees increased from $30/return to $50/return on Starter, and from $35/return to $55/return on Professional

For businesses at scale, these increases compound. Higher order volumes result in steep subscription cost increases, while higher per-filing rates and fewer included AutoFile credits add to a pricing structure that gets significantly more expensive as you grow.

Here’s what the increase looked like for one customer who shared their TaxJar pricing notice with TaxCloud:

Legacy pricing New pricing (already live)
Annual subscription (Professional annual plan) $5,389/year $8,999/year
AutoFile per filing $35/filing $55/filing
Increase +67% on subscription cost
+57% on AutoFile fees

What is TaxJar?

tax jar

TaxJar is a sales tax compliance software platform owned by Stripe that provides sales tax automation for ecommerce businesses. TaxJar offers features like automated sales tax calculation, filing and remittance, and nexus exposure tracking to support sales tax compliance for sellers with customers in multiple states. TaxJar focuses on product-based sales tax and doesn’t cover service sales tax obligations in most states.

Since the acquisition, TaxJar has been repositioned primarily as Stripe Tax’s U.S. filing partner. The Stripe team decided not to invest in expanding it into an international provider, with product development focused on the Stripe Tax integration rather than the standalone platform.

Being one of the first sales tax providers on the market, TaxJar continues to be a recognizable brand serving ecommerce businesses and supporting key pre-built integrations including Shopify and WooCommerce.

In this guide, we break down exactly what TaxJar costs, where it falls short, and why growing businesses are increasingly switching to TaxCloud.

What features are included with TaxJar?

Before we dive into TaxJar pricing, let’s look at the features and functionality the solution provides.

TaxJar has two plans:

  1. Starter and
  2. Professional

Many key features like automated nexus exposure tracking, exemption certificate storage, and API access are only available on the Professional plan.

Here are the features included in TaxJar’s Starter and Professional plans:

How much does TaxJar cost?

TaxJar’s pricing has separate cost layers, and most businesses don’t see the full picture until they’re already locked in.

  1. Subscription cost: $39/month (Starter) or $99/month (Professional). This is the base rate most people see first.
  2. Subscription tiers for higher order volumes: Your base subscription only covers 200 orders/month. Exceed that and your subscription cost goes up automatically.
  3. Flex fees: Exceed your tier in a given month and TaxJar charges the difference to the next tier up (automatically, with no warning).
  4. Filing fees: Subscription plans include a small number of free AutoFile credits per year — two on Starter, four on Professional. Beyond those, every additional state return costs $50 (Starter) or $55 (Professional), unless you purchase a bundle upfront.
  5. API costs: On the Professional plan, every 10 API calls count as one order which can push you into a higher pricing tier faster than your actual transaction volume would suggest.

Here’s what each layer actually costs.

TaxJar subscription pricing by order volume

TaxJar’s base subscription only covers 200 orders per month. Exceed that and your subscription cost goes up.

With TaxJar, an order is any transaction imported or processed through the platform — for most ecommerce businesses, that means every sale you make is an “order” that counts toward your monthly limit.

200 orders is a low ceiling. A mid-sized Shopify store running a single sales channel can hit that in days during a busy period. Once you cross the threshold, TaxJar automatically moves you to the next pricing tier for that month.

To give you a sense of how quickly costs escalate:

If your business generates 500 orders/month:

  • Starter subscription costs $59/month
  • Professional subscription costs $249/month

If your business generates 5,000 orders/month:

  • Starter subscription costs $319/month
  • Professional subscription costs $1,599/month

TaxJar’s base $39 and $99 subscription pricing applies to very few real businesses.

To put the 2026 increase in context, here’s how subscription costs changed at common order volumes:

Orders/month Starter (old) Starter (new) Professional (old) Professional (new)
200 $19 $39 $99 $99 (no change)
500 $29 $59 $199 $249
1K $49 $99 $349 $499
2.5K $99 $219 $499 $1,199
5K $149 $319 $649 $1,599
10K $199 $429 $849 $1,999

Here’s the full breakdown of TaxJar’s current subscription pricing by order volume.

Note: *Your TaxJar sales tax reports will reflect the total orders processed each month, which is the fastest way to monitor whether you’re approaching your tier limit.

TaxJar flex fees

TaxJar also charges flex fees during high-volume months. If you exceed your order volume, you’re automatically moved to the next tier and charged the difference.

For example, if you’re on the Professional 500 plan and process 750 orders in a month, you pay the difference between the Professional 500 and Professional 1K plans — an additional $250 for that month.

TaxJar frames this as a feature. For businesses with seasonal volume spikes, it’s an unpredictable additional cost on top of an already escalating pricing structure.

TaxJar filing fees

Both TaxJar plans include a small number of free auto-filing credits per year — two on Starter (one every six months), four on Professional (one per quarter).

For most businesses filing in multiple states, those credits cover a fraction of actual sales tax filings.

Additional filings are billed at the AutoFile cost: $50 per filing on Starter, $55 per filing on Professional.

TaxJar does offer auto-filing bundles that provide a slight discount per filing. Since the bundles don’t have flexible volume options, you could end up paying for far more filings than you need.

TaxJar Starter TaxJar Professional
Included auto-filing 2 free auto-filings included (previously 4) 4 free auto-filings included (previously 12)
Pay-as-you-go auto-filing $50/filing $55/filing
25 filing bundle $1,125 $1,250
50 filing bundle $2,225 $2,500
100 filing bundle $4,500 $5,000
Unlimited filings $10,000 $12,000

To translate that into a real-world example:

A business on TaxJar’s Professional plan processing 1,000 orders a month starts at $499/month just for the subscription. Add filing in three states — one filing is covered by TaxJar’s included quarterly credit, the other two cost $55 each — plus one state registration at $299, and the actual monthly cost hits $908.

That’s nearly ten times the $99 base rate most people see when they land on TaxJar’s pricing page.

TaxJar API pricing

The TaxJar API is only available on the Professional plan — but API access changes how TaxJar calculates your order volume, which can push you into a higher pricing tier faster than your actual transaction volume would suggest.

On the Starter plan, order volume is calculated based on the number of transactions you import into the system every month. On the TaxJar Professional plan, however, you’re charged for a number of different types of API calls that might not result in a completed transaction.

  • Any API tax calculations or rate lookups count as 1/10th of an order. Ten calls equals one order.
  • You also pay for every transaction you import into TaxJar.

For businesses making heavy API calls, this can push you into a higher order tier even if your actual transaction volume hasn’t changed — meaning you pay more without processing more orders.

Looking for a TaxJar alternative? Better sales tax compliance software for growing businesses.

TaxJar’s pricing adds up fast — and that’s before you factor in what you’re not getting. TaxCloud is sales tax compliance software built for growing ecommerce and SaaS businesses that want accurate, automated sales tax compliance without the escalating costs or offshore support queue.

  • Lower pricing. TaxCloud’s Starter plan starts at $19/month — half the cost of TaxJar’s Starter. The Premium plan starts at $79/month vs. TaxJar Professional’s $99/month. Filing starts at $39/return and drops to $20/return with volume discounts.
  • SST program discounts. TaxCloud is a Certified Service Provider under the Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) program. TaxJar doesn’t participate. That means TaxCloud customers get free filing in 24 states — savings that add up to thousands of dollars annually for multi-state sellers. One TaxCloud customer saved $40,000 in a single year by switching to TaxCloud and taking advantage of the SST program.
  • Responsive U.S.-based support. TaxJar’s Shopify App Store rating has dropped to 2.9 stars since the Stripe acquisition — recent reviews cite locked accounts, 24+ hour response times, and support routed through an offshore team. TaxCloud’s U.S.-based support team responds within 2 hours and resolves tickets within 24 hours. No offshore routing, no multi-day delays, no phone support locked behind a high-volume tier.
  • Automated nexus tracking on every plan. TaxCloud includes automated economic nexus tracking on both Starter and Premium plans. With TaxJar, automated nexus alerts are locked behind the Professional plan — Starter users get a manual checker only.
  • Audit support included. TaxCloud offers audit support as an add-on at $99/month. TaxJar provides no formal audit support — if an audit notice arrives, you’re managing it yourself.

Here’s how the two platforms compare at the plan level:

TaxJar pricing vs TaxCloud pricing: 2026 comparison and examples

Subscription costs tell part of the story. Filing costs tell the rest — and that’s where the gap between TaxJar and TaxCloud becomes significant.

TaxJar charges a $50-55 per return in every state, with no volume discount path outside of rigid bundle tiers that can force you to pay for more filings than you need. TaxCloud’s filing structure works differently.

As a Certified Service Provider under the Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) program, eligible filings in SST-participating states are free. For non-SST states, filing starts at $39/return and can drop  to $20/return with volume discounts, meaning you pay for the volume you actually need.

Here’s what the total monthly cost looks like across three common business profiles.

Example 1: A Shopify seller processing 200 orders per month and filing in 5 states

This example assumes 3 SST states (free filing) and 2 non-SST states ($39/return).

TaxJar Starter TaxCloud Starter
Subscription $39/month $19/month
Filing — SST states (3) $150 ($50 × 3) $0 (free)
Filing — non-SST states (2) $100 ($50 × 2) $78 ($39 × 2, pay-as-you-go)
Monthly total $289 $97
Annual total $3,468 $1,164
Annual savings with TaxCloud $2,304

Example 2: An ecommerce business processing 1,000 orders per month and filing in 10 states

This example assumes 6 SST states (free filing) and 4 non-SST states ($39/return).

TaxJar Professional TaxCloud Premium
Subscription $499/month $299/month
Filing — SST states (6) $330 ($55 × 6) $0 (free)
Filing — non-SST states (4) $220 ($55 × 4) $156 ($39 × 4, pay-as-you-go)
Monthly total $1,049 $455
Annual total $12,588 $5,460
Annual savings with TaxCloud $7,128

Example 3: A SaaS business processing 400 orders per month and filing in 15 states

This example assumes 8 SST states (free filing) and 7 non-SST states ($39/return).

TaxJar Professional TaxCloud Premium
Subscription $249/month $149/month
Filing — SST states (8) $440 ($55 × 8) $0 (free)
Filing — non-SST states (7) $385 ($55 × 7) $273 ($39 × 7, pay-as-you-go)
Monthly total $1,074 $422
Annual total $12,888 $5,064
Annual savings with TaxCloud $7,824

SST filings are free for TaxCloud customers enrolled in SST for those states with no physical nexus. For non-SST states, filing costs decrease with volume — from $39/return down to $20/return at higher tiers. See how TaxCloud’s SST participation works.

TaxJar doesn’t participate in SST. You pay $50-$55 per return in every state, every month, with no volume-based reduction outside of rigid bundles that may require purchasing more filing credits than you need.

Is TaxJar worth it?

For small businesses filing in fewer than five states, TaxJar is a functional starting point. If you’re a Stripe customer, or primarily selling on marketplaces where tax is handled at the platform level, TaxJar’s Starter plan covers the basics at a reasonable entry price.

For businesses scaling beyond that — filing in 10 or more states, processing thousands of orders monthly, or dealing with multi-channel compliance — the costs outpace the value. The combination of order-based subscription tiers, per-filing fees, flex fees, and offshore support creates a compliance environment that gets more expensive and more frustrating as you grow.

If you’re evaluating enterprise-grade alternatives, Avalara is another option — though it comes with significantly higher costs and complexity than either TaxJar or TaxCloud.

In short: TaxJar is where small businesses start. TaxCloud is where growing businesses stay.

TaxJar costing you more than it should?

TaxCloud handles sales tax calculation, nexus tracking, registration, and filing for ecommerce and SaaS businesses — at a fraction of what TaxJar charges. Transparent pricing, SST savings, and U.S.-based support on every plan.

Frequently asked questions

Did TaxJar increase their pricing recently?

Yes. TaxJar raised prices in 2026. The Starter plan increased from $19/month to $39/month and AutoFile fees rose significantly. The new pricing is already live on TaxJar’s platform. If you’re currently evaluating TaxJar, the pricing you see on their website today reflects the new rates.

What are TaxJar’s current sales tax rates?

TaxJar doesn’t set sales tax rates — those are determined by each state. TaxJar’s platform pulls current rates automatically based on your customers’ locations. For a breakdown of current rates by state, see our sales tax by state guide.

Does TaxJar support economic nexus dashboard tracking?

Economic nexus dashboard tracking is only available on the TaxJar Professional plan. The Starter plan includes a manual nexus checker but doesn’t provide automated alerts when you’re approaching a new state’s threshold. Sales tax changes at the state level can trigger new nexus obligations without warning.

What is a resale certificate and does TaxJar support them?

A resale certificate allows businesses to purchase goods tax-free when those goods will be resold. TaxJar supports exemption certificate storage on the Professional plan only — it’s not available on Starter. TaxCloud includes exemption certificate management on both Starter and Premium plans.
