Multi-state sales tax registration
Brands selling in the U.S. are required to register for sales tax in each state where they have nexus. TaxCloud’s experienced team has helped thousands of businesses across the country streamline the registration process.
Hassle-free sales tax registration
Leave registration to us
TaxCloud prepares and files the paperwork required to obtain sales tax licenses in any U.S. state. Our team manages the process on your behalf, so you don’t have to navigate state websites and forms on your own.
Benefit from the Streamlined Sales Tax program
As a Certified Service Provider in the SST program, TaxCloud can register your business in all 24 member states at no cost. Share your details with our team and, if you meet the requirements, these registrations are included as part of your onboarding process.
Straightforward registration in non-SST states
For non-SST states, TaxCloud offers flat-rate filing at $249 per state. Our team will collect your info, file, and send you the confirmation. Most approvals are issued within 7-21 business days.
Support for sellers expanding to the US
Businesses outside the U.S. can also register through TaxCloud. We accept EIN, SIN, ITIN, or passport documentation and work directly with state agencies to complete your applications.
Integrate with your marketplace and tech stack
Once you’re registered, TaxCloud connects automatically with e-commerce and accounting platforms like Shopify, BigCommerce, and QuickBooks Online. Teams can also integrate via API or import/export via CSV to fit TaxCloud into most compliance workflows.
How it works
Share your business information
TaxCloud collects your registration information, including company name, address, ownership, and identification number.
We prepare and submit applications
Our team completes the required forms for states where you reached nexus and submits them directly to the appropriate tax agencies. If you’re participating in the SST program, we’ll also set ourselves up as your Certified Service Provider for future filings through the program.
State review and approval
Each state processes the application and issues your certificate of registration and account number. This usually takes between 7-21 business days, depending on the state. Once the process completes, TaxCloud will send a confirmation, as well as all of your registration information. Your tax certificate is shipped from the state and will arrive separately via USPS.
Collect and file
After TaxCloud submits registration details, brands can begin collecting sales tax and managing that data inside the platform while waiting on the registration process to complete. Our team will align the filing start date with the registration paperwork so that details are accurate.
FAQs
Sales tax registration is required in states where a business has nexus obligations. This can be through physical presence like an office or warehouse, or via economic activity (usually $100,000+ in sales or a set number of transactions).
TaxCloud helps you automatically identify where registration is needed by consolidating sales from marketplaces and tracking progress through our nexus tracker. For that, you need to create a TaxCloud account and connect your stores. As soon as you reach nexus threshold TaxCloud will send you a notification to start the registration process.
For very small businesses just getting started and selling only within their home state, TaxCloud’s nexus tracking is free as part of our Free plan. More details can be found here.
Not always. States generally require registration once the conditions for nexus have been met for your taxable services and products.
However, many businesses choose to register early if they know they are on track to pass nexus soon, as companies are still responsible for tax collection on sales or transactions exceeding nexus thresholds.
Note: TaxCloud provides sales tax compliance solutions. We do not offer legal or tax advice. For specific tax-related questions or guidance on your unique filing situation, we recommend consulting a sales tax accountant.
Typically, processing times range from 7-21 business days, depending on the state’s department of revenue. Some states complete the process quickly, while others take longer or have a more involved process.
Definitely. International sellers can register in U.S. states using EIN, SIN, ITIN, or a passport number but will also need to have a U.S. FEIN for their business, as well as a US bank account, in order to register and pay sales tax. TaxCloud has experience supporting global merchants with these requirements.
Most (not all!) registrations are permanent. Once you’ve registered in a state, the registration often stays active until you formally close your account.
Even if your sales drop below the nexus threshold a year later, most states expect you to remain registered and continue filing returns unless you officially request cancellation.
In states like Alabama, Arizona, and Colorado, where renewals are required, we offer support as part of our standard filing services.
