Shopify recently announced that it’s ending automated filing in Shopify Tax.

Shopify will keep filing returns for sales through December 31, 2026 (New York gets one more quarter, through February 2027). After that, every Shopify store that relies on automated filing needs to file on its own or hand filing to someone else.

This change only affects filing. Shopify Tax will keep calculating sales tax at checkout, and your reports will stay current in your Shopify dashboard. Calculation is what Shopify does best, and brands should feel confident keeping Shopify Tax as their rate engine at checkout.

A quick history of Shopify automated filing

Shopify announced automated filing in June 2025. It was always narrow in scope, and brands selling on channels other than Shopify had to do extra work to file.

It also stopped at filing. Brands still had to handle registering in new states on their own.

And it didn’t give brands a way into the Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) program, which meant they couldn’t take advantage of free filing and registration in the 24 SST member states.

That made automated filing a solid choice for merchants with simple setups filing in a few states. But it wasn’t built for mid-market brands on Shopify or Shopify Plus.

Here’s the setup we see work best for growing Shopify brands in the U.S.:

  1. Shopify Tax for calculation at checkout
  2. A U.S.-based sales tax partner lto handle everything after checkout: nexus tracking, registration, filing, remittance, and notices

What to do if you’re currently using Shopify automated filing

Shopify will file returns for sales made through December 31, 2026.

For most Shopify merchants, the last automated return will be the December 2026 monthly return or the Q4 2026 quarterly return, both due in January 2027.

If you’re a monthly filer, you’ll need a new way to handle the return covering January 2027 sales, due in February 2027. Quarterly filers have a little longer. Either way, the change lands right after peak season, when finance teams are closing the year and nobody is looking for a new project.

At TaxCloud, we want to make this transition as easy as possible. Any brand that switches from Shopify automated filing to TaxCloud by December 31, 2026 gets filing at $30 per return, zero subscription fees, and free migration. (Shopify automated filing costs $75 per return on Basic, Grow, and Advanced plans, and $50 on Plus.)

More than 2,000 growing businesses, many of them on Shopify and Shopify Plus, trust TaxCloud with their sales tax compliance.

Whichever sales tax partners you evaluate, here are four questions worth asking.

1. Will I get free filing and registration in the 24 SST states?

Twenty-four states participate in the Streamlined Sales Tax program. Eligible remote sellers who work with a Certified Service Provider pay nothing to file or register in those states.

If you were paying $50 or $75 per filing with Shopify automated filing in any of the 24 SST states, you’ll now pay $0 for those filings when you work with a certified SST provider like TaxCloud. Those savings add up, especially for fast-growing Shopify brands.

2. Will you handle the migration so I can focus on the holidays?

A good sales tax compliance partner should do the heavy lifting here. Start with how the provider brings in your data from Shopify. It should be automated, and you should be able to see it on the new platform right away.

Next, ask whether someone will be assigned to your account to move your filings over and make sure you’re set up with each state, so there are no gaps once Shopify stops filing for you.

Shopify will let you download a report for each automated return until April 30, 2027. Your new provider needs those records and a clean line between the last return Shopify filed and the first one they file. Ask who pulls the reports, who sets up state access, and how long it takes.

One caution: If any of your automated returns in Shopify show “Not filed,” Shopify won’t file it. Download that report and get that return filed before you do anything else.

3. What will I actually pay once I’m fully set up?

Introductory pricing is common right now. Find out how much you’ll pay after any promo ends, across the states you file in today and the states you expect to file in after another year of growth.

If you think you’re on track to hit nexus in every state in the U.S. next year, look at what that total cost will be and compare that across the different solutions you evaluate.

TaxCloud pricing is built to scale with your business. Brands switching from Shopify automated filing by the end of 2026 get filing at $30 per return, and the per-return cost drops even further as your filing volume grows.

4. Have you helped other businesses like mine?

Ask for testimonials from customers that look like you: similar revenue, the same platforms and channels, a similar product mix. A partner that has handled your situation before will spot problems you haven’t hit yet.

Here is what a few brands have said about switching to TaxCloud:

I’d say I probably spend 70% less time thinking about sales tax.

Brett Goodson — Almond Cow

TaxCloud doesn’t just respond to issues. They explain what’s been filed, what’s coming next, and what we can safely ignore. That kind of proactive thinking makes a huge difference.

Chris Manduka — Cable Bullet

I think you have a really great value prop, especially being SST certified. Other companies don’t have that. I couldn’t think of one reason to not switch over.

Lorén Jackson — Rareform

Shopify App Store reviews are another useful signal, because they come from brands running the same setup you are. TaxCloud is rated 4.8 out of 5 on the Shopify App Store across 100 reviews (as of July 2026).

The bigger picture
