Shopify Setup Error Leads to Missed Sales Tax in 15 States

A Canadian Shopify merchant recently shared on Shopify’s support forum that their store had not been charging sales tax in 15 U.S. states. The problem? Their “Collect Sales Tax” settings weren’t correctly enabled, and Shopify’s support guidance left them confused. As a result, the seller had to cover the missed sales tax out of pocket — a costly mistake that highlights the risks of relying on default platform settings.

What Happened

The merchant had been selling into the U.S. under the assumption that Shopify automatically handled all state-level sales tax requirements. But when they reviewed their account, they discovered that tax was not being collected in multiple states where they had sales.

Key issues they reported:

  • Shopify’s tax settings were not applied consistently across states
  • Enabling “Collect Sales Tax” must be done state by state — it is not automatic
  • Support documentation and guidance from Shopify were not clear enough to prevent the error

By the time the issue was discovered, the merchant had to absorb the cost of uncollected tax, eroding profits and creating compliance concerns.

Why This Matters for Sellers

This case illustrates a problem many international merchants face when selling into the U.S.:

  • Sales tax is state-driven — unlike Canada’s GST/HST, there’s no single federal system.
  • Platform defaults don’t equal compliance — Shopify, like other ecommerce platforms, requires sellers to manually configure each state.
  • Errors fall on the seller — states expect tax to be collected, even if the platform setup was incomplete.

For sellers outside the U.S., the complexity of 45+ states with sales tax obligations can be overwhelming. But ignoring or misconfiguring settings can result in either paying tax out of pocket or facing penalties down the line.

What Sellers Should Do

If you sell into the U.S. through Shopify or another ecommerce platform:

  • Review your nexus footprint: Identify every state where you have economic nexus or marketplace obligations.
  • Check your tax settings: In Shopify, go to Settings > Taxes and Duties > United States and confirm that “Collect Sales Tax” is enabled for each state.
  • Don’t assume automation = compliance: Platforms calculate tax, but it’s your responsibility to configure the rules correctly.
  • Use a tax automation partner: TaxCloud can help ensure that every state’s rules are applied accurately and updated automatically.
